NEWS AND UPDATES

The latest from our club…

2020, what a year it has been. In the past, we have survived dire financial years, hurricanes, location changes over the years now a pandemic and with the help of our membership and sponsors, we have managed to keep our club going, reaching new goals of offering additional funding for scholarships and support for the Galveston Seafarer’s Center.

We could not have accomplished it without our dedicated membership, sponsors and guidance from all of our past and present officers and board members. We wish to thank all of our sponsors over the past 20 years, most who have supported us over that time at many of our functions over this period.

We also want to take this opportunity to announce that even with the pandemic this year, we plan to award $12,000 in scholarships to a selected group of maritime students at Texas A&M Maritime Academy Galveston and to present the Galveston Seafarer’s Center with a donation of $1,000.

We also would like to announce a membership drive for 2021. Our goal is to always keep our membership growing as the Galveston area economy improves in 2021. We need new members!

Membership Dues

Membership dues for this year will be mailed out in late June/early July and are due upon receipt. This will cover the period July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022.

You may ask or have asked in the past “where do my dues payments go?” Well, one half of your annual dues payments are reported and forwarded to the International Propeller Club to fund programs that support the U.S. maritime industry. In the past this amount was $37.50 per member. The other $37.50 stays local to help us fund scholarships and support of the U.S. maritime industry in Galveston County. Our total dues invoice to you has been $75.00 for many years.

Last year, the International Propeller Club raised their portion to $45.00 per year per member. We need to adjust our annual membership rate to $90.00/year, seniors fully retired will increase to $45.00/year. This will assist in covering our financial commitments to Texas A&M Maritime Academy and the Galveston Seafarers Center and offer general support of the Galveston area maritime community.

It has been a very long time since we have had to do this and we hope you understand our need for the adjustment. It has been a really tough past year for everyone, we understand that. The Officers and Board of Governors welcome your comments concerning this increase, so please let us know.

We look forward to seeing everyone again at our annual Maritime Day Dinner on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, sponsored by the Port of Galveston. Rodger Rees, Port Director/CEO will be the guest speaker and he will give an update on the Port of Galveston.

Hope to see you there for another great turnout.

Respectfully,

Officers and Board of Governors, Propeller Club, Port of Galveston

Latest Update from Texas A&M at Galveston
The Texas A&M Maritime Academy is one of six state maritime academies in the United States and provides highly trained and qualified U.S. Coast Guard-licensed maritime professionals to support national security and waterborne commerce. We have operated for over 15 years without adequate training facilities. The federal government has invested in the construction of new National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV) to replace state academy training ships. Texas A&M University at Galveston is requesting $45 million from the State of Texas to support infrastructure and dock upgrades to receive this ship.
